Description

The narrow-striped mongoose (Mungotictis decemlineata) is a member of the carnivoran family Eupleridae, subfamily Galidiinae which is endemic to Madagascar. When I was yet a schoolgirl these animals were counted as Viverridae. Since than the latter has proved to be typical wastebasket for various distinct clades. As the first to exclude were ichneumonlike mongooses -family Herpestidae, and than a few other followed like Nandinidae, Prionodontidae and Eupleridae. Euplerids form separate group exclusive for Madagascar, and to them famous fossa also belongs.

All this is certainly well known to people interested im mammals systematics but I made this additional description for random persons.

Feisty! I thought they might be. They catch and eat snakes, don't they?
